ROCKINGHAM — Despite a pair of aces from Kalynn McCormick, the Lady Raiders varsity volleyball team succumbed to the Uwharrie Charter Academy Eagles at home Monday evening.

Richmond struggled in the first two sets, each one ending 25-12 in favor of Uwharrie Charter. The Lady Raiders mounted a slight comeback in the third set (25-17), but it wasn’t enough to keep the game going, resulting in a 3-0 loss.

“We came back in the third, and that’s the same thing we did when we went there,” coach Ashleigh Larsen said, referring to the Aug. 13 match that ended with the same score.

“Uwharrie’s got a great team, they’re very competitive and make it very far in the state playoffs,” Larsen continued. “I think we just kinda played back on our heels early … I think we’ll bounce back tomorrow and come back swinging.”

Larsen added that she saw “some good things” as well as things the team needs to work on.

The varsity team is currently 3-8 for the season (1-1 in conference) and hosts Hoke County (11-3) on Tuesday.

The Lady Raiders previously had a 3-1 win over Pine Forest and a 3-1 loss to Jack Britt. Their other two season wins were against Anson and Mount Tabor.

“We’ve been competitive, we just can’t finish,” Larsen said. “It’s coming, and they’ve been working hard … I told them ‘Let them dogs out,’ hopefully they’ll come tomorrow.”

The junior varsity team had better success, winning in two sets — 25-16, 25-17.
