ROCKINGHAM — A South Carolina company has been awarded a contract to make improvements at the city’s wastewater treatment plant.
The Rockingham City Council on Tuesday awarded the contract to Harper General Contractors, based in Greenville, South Carolina, for $12,707, 022.
Slated improvements include aeration, electrical and generators, and a sludge dewatering facility, according to the meeting’s agenda.
Prior to closing out the meeting, Mayor John Hutchinson presented a pair of proclamations: one recognizing Sept. 11 as a “Day of Remembrance” in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy; the other recognizing Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week.

Included in the agenda were reports from several city departments.
Parks and Recreation Director Blake Kelly noted in his report that the 33rd season of youth soccer was scheduled to start on Sept. 8 (the same day as the meeting.” Kelly said that there were 350 children registered and the season should conclude on Oct. 10.
Registration for volleyball and flag football are both scheduled for Sept. 16.
Regarding volleyball, Kelly said that program “has established a good foundation for continued growth” after 11 seasons of “solid enrollment.”
With flag football entering its fifth season, Kelly said that program has “generated a great deal of interest” and is becoming one of the city’s most popular offerings.
