ROCKINGHAM — A man with a list of pending charges is now accused of passing a bogus Benjamin.
An arrest warrant alleges that 36-year-old Joseph Stuart Sprulin, of Rockingham, used a fake $100 bill at a gas station on March 10.
Spurlin was also allegedly in possession of five or more bills of movie prop money.
The warrant was issued April 2 and Spurlin was arrested June 10 on felony charges of uttering a forged instrument and possession of 5 or more counterfeit instruments.
He was booked into the Richmond County Jail where he is being held without bond. Spurlin is scheduled to appear in court June 18.
Online court records show Spurlin has multiple pending cases from 2025 and 2026, which include charges of: felony larceny; possession of stolen goods or property; possession of a stolen firearm; maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance; possession with intent to sell or deliver Schedule II, III and IV controlled substances; felony possession of cocaine; possession of a firearm by a felon; and obtaining property by false pretenses.
Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Spurlin has the following prior convictions:
2010 - misdemeanor larceny
2013 - larceny of firearms, possessing a stolen firearm
2017 - driving while impaired
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
