SEGA returns to Rockingham Dragway

Posted

ROCKINGHAM — Four drivers clutched wins in their respective classes Friday evening in the continuation of a Southeast Gassers Association event Friday night at Rockingham Dragway.

Following a rain-out at Knoxville Dragway in late June, SEGA officials postponed the eliminations of the RAM Clutches Nationals to precede the Rock Revival this weekend.

The A/Gas final was a showdown between two drivers from Boiling Springs, South Carolina — with Ben Christopher behind the wheel of Happy Days edging out Leslie Horne’s Chick Magnet for the win.

In another same-state rivalry, Ted McKee, of Lenoir City, Tennessee, won the B/Gas class over a fellow driver from the Volunteer State.

Other class winners were Tony Tatgenhorst of Ohio in C/Gas, and Jerry Dean of Lacey’s Spring, Alabama, in Super Stock.

The Bowl4 Life Foundation Rock Revival, on Saturday, will include the Show & Go Cruise In for those with classic cars from 1972 or before. The first 100 participants will receive a commemorative dash plaque designed by Stephen Smith, the artist behind SEGA’s event posters.

Tom Sarmento, head mechanic from “The Dukes of Hazzard,” is also back at the track for the event. On Friday, there was one General Lee near his tent. Sarmento has been on-site to sign autographs at the past two iterations of Mopars at the Rock.

Gates open at 1 p.m., with the racing scheduled to start at 5 p.m.

This is SEGA’s first event at Rockingham in more than a decade.
