ROCKINGHAM — Investigators with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office have charged another individual in an ongoing fraud case.

Savannah Mills, 24, of Hamlet, is accused of using the banking information of the late John T. Grant Sr. “to gain financial benefits” on May 2.

Grant passed away on Dec. 19, 2023 at the age of 98.

A warrant charging Mills with one felony count each of identity theft and obtaining property by false pretenses, as well as a misdemeanor count of possession or manufacturing of a false ID was issued Oct. 29 and she was arrested Nov. 3.

Mills was booked into the Richmond County Jail on a $10,000 secured bond and is scheduled for an arraignment on Nov. 19.

She appears to have no other pending charges or prior criminal convictions in North Carolina.

The sheriff’s office first charged Mary Elizabeth Collins and Laura Gail Cox in connection to the fraud investigation in late July. Since then, at least four others — Tiffany Michelle Freeman, Joseph Harrison Potter, Kimberly Lynn Cox and Jessica Louise Ennis — have been charged in the case.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
