ROCKINGHAM  — Richmond County and the rest of the Sandhills are bracing for another round of winter weather.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for most of central North Carolina east of Interstate 77 and west of U.S. 701, effective from 7 a.m. Wednesday until 10 a.m. Thursday.

Affected counties other than Richmond include Anson, Cumberland, Harnett, Hoke, Lee, Moore, Montgomery, Sampson, Stanly and Scotland.

The forecast currently calls for the precipitation starting as rain before transitioning to a mix of snow and rain from 1-4 p.m, then freezing rain and possibly sleet into the evening and overnight hours.

Forecasters are predicting up to an inch of snow across the county, as well as a 10th of an inch of ice accumulation west of U.S. 1 and up to a quarter-inch east of the highway.

The NWS warns that travel could become hazardous Wednesday afternoon. Heavy ice accumulation could also lead to tree damage and power outages.

Wednesday is a staff development day for Richmond County Schools so there are no classes for students.
