ROCKINGHAM — Winter and spring sports will overlap this week at Richmond Senior High School.
With the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams set to begin the postseason, Richmond’s baseball, softball and girls’ soccer teams will officially open their regular season schedules.
No. 9 Raiders, No. 16 Lady Raiders both get Ballantyne Ridge
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association released its official playoff brackets for boys’ and girls’ basketball Saturday. Both of Richmond’s teams received a first-round home game against the same opponent.
The No. 9 Raiders (18-6), fresh off their Mid-South Conference championship win, were the higher-seeded team for Richmond. They’ll get No. 24 Ballantyne Ridge High School (10-15).
Finishing third in the final MSC standings, the No. 16 Lady Raiders (11-11) just made the cut to host No. 17 Ballantyne Ridge (13-13).
Both games will be played Tuesday at Richmond, starting with the girls at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:30 p.m. The Richmond Observer will publish playoff previews before game day.
Varsity baseball, softball open seasons at home
Richmond’s baseball and softball programs will each play two games this week and start their respective campaigns on their home diamonds Wednesday.
The Raiders and third-year head coach Eric Brown will host former conference foe Lee County High School Wednesday, and follow that with another home game Friday against rival Scotland High School.
Both baseball games will begin at 6 p.m. The junior varsity baseball team will not play this week.
The Lady Raiders and second-year head coach Caroline Wilson will also open their season Wednesday against a former conference opponent in Union Pines High School. The varsity game is set for 6:30 p.m., with the JV game slated for a 4:30 p.m. start.
Thursday will see the JV and varsity softball teams travel to South Stanly High School for an away game. The non-conference games will start at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Varsity girls soccer to travel for season opener
Also beginning its regular season this week, the Lady Raider soccer team will travel Wednesday and return home Friday.
First the Lady Raiders and eighth-year head coach Christ Larsen will play Wednesday at non-conference Porter Ridge High School (6 p.m.), followed by their home opener Friday with Terry Sanford High School (7 p.m.).
The JV girls’ soccer team will play at Porter Ridge Wednesday (4:30 p.m.) and host Terry Sanford Friday (5:15 p.m.).
