Charles Steven “Steve” Hicks, 66, of Rockingham, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Oct. 30, 2026.
He was born Dec. 18, 1959, in Charlotte, son of the late Ellis Berdette Hicks Sr. and Gertrude Kirkley Hicks.
Steve was a hardworking, selfless, and caring man who was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He began his working career in 1976 with Revco, now known as CVS. Through his dedication and strong work ethic, he became a store manager in the late 1970s and continued serving in that position until 2008. He then worked with Dollar Tree from 2008 until 2012.
In 2022, Steve began a new chapter in his career when he became a barber, working alongside Chris Snead at Bushwacker Barbershop. He enjoyed meeting people and forming friendships through his work. In April 2026, he proudly opened his own shop, Town & Country Barbershop, in Ellerbe, a dream that reflected his determination and love for his community. In earlier years, he faithfully served as a deacon with Calvary Baptist Church.
Steve was a man who liked things a certain way, especially when it came to cleanliness and organization. He was particular about keeping things neat and would often “stack and pack” anything that wasn't being used. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was known as quite the jokester who loved playing pranks and keeping those around him laughing. Steve had a special way with animals, and it seemed that all animals loved him just as much as he loved them. He enjoyed watching "Law & Order" and listening to Reba McEntire.
Above all else, Steve cherished his family. Sandra was the love of his life, and the love they shared was one of the greatest joys of his life. He loved his children and grandchildren dearly and was incredibly proud of each of them. He was the person others could always count on, never hesitating to help whenever someone needed him. His selfless nature, generous heart, humor, and willingness to be there for others left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Steve will be remembered for his strong work ethic, loving heart, and the countless ways he made life a little better for those around him. He will be deeply missed by his beloved Sandra, his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ellis Berdette “Buddy” Hicks Jr., and sister, Karen Hicks Blue.
Left to cherish Steve’s memories are his loving wife of 36 years, Sandra Hicks, of the home; children, Ashley Hicks Turner (Chris), Dr. Cody Steven Hicks and Amanda Cottingham, all of Rockingham; grandchildren, Neely Turner, C.J. Turner and Kynsleigh Cottingham; brother, Alan Hicks of Rockingham; brothers-in-law, John Bullard of Montana and Mike Bullard of Minnesota; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as many life-long friends.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, from noon-2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, Hamlet.
The funeral service will immediately follow visitation, at 2 p.m., with Pastor Larry Frye, Pastor Scott Connor, and Pastor Jason Lutz officiating. Burial will follow at Richmond County Memorial Park.
