For more than 40 years, Richmond County Hospice has remained committed to providing exceptional, compassionate hospice care to patients and families throughout our community.
One of the most important clinical leadership roles within any hospice organization is that of the chief medical officer.
We have been incredibly fortunate to have Dr. Steven Strobel faithfully serve in this role since Nov. 1, 2014.
After 12 years of dedicated service, Dr. Strobel has made the decision to officially retire as our chief medical officer, effective Nov. 1, 2026.
Throughout his tenure, Dr. Strobel has been instrumental in shaping the quality, integrity, and compassionate philosophy of care that defines Richmond County Hospice today. His clinical expertise, servant leadership, and unwavering commitment to our patients, families, and healthcare partners have left a lasting impact on our organization and the community we are privileged to serve.
While retirement marks the close of one remarkable chapter, it also begins an exciting new one.
It is our pleasure to announce that Dr. Matthew Reinhardt will become the next chief medical officer of Richmond County Hospice, effective Nov. 1, 2026.
Originally from Kansas City, Missouri, Dr. Reinhardt attended college in the Chicago area before earning his medical degree from Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, one of the nation's oldest and most respected medical schools. He completed his residency at Christiana Care Health System in Delaware and has practiced emergency medicine for more than 25 years.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Reinhardt has served in several leadership positions, including medical director of the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center at FirstHealth, before continuing his medical practice at Womack Army Medical Center at Fort Bragg.
Nearly a decade ago, his longtime friend and colleague, Dr. Strobel, introduced him to hospice medicine. Dr. Reinhardt recognizes that the compassion, communication, and patient-centered philosophy that define hospice perfectly complement the skills and perspective he developed through decades of emergency medicine and wound care.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Reinhardt enjoys spending time with his wife, Clare, and their four adult children, one of whom is still in college. Their family also includes two beloved dogs. When he is not caring for patients, you will likely find him exercising, relaxing at the beach, traveling, or cheering on his wife as she competes in marathons.
As Richmond County Hospice looks toward the future, we remain steadfast in our commitment to clinical excellence, collaboration, and compassionate end-of-life care. We are confident that Dr. Reinhardt's extensive medical experience, thoughtful leadership, and genuine compassion will continue the exceptional standard of care our community has come to expect.
Please join us in thanking Dr. Steven Strobel for his many years of dedicated service and in warmly welcoming Dr. Matthew Reinhardt to the Richmond County Hospice family.
Thank you for your continued trust, partnership, and collaboration in caring for patients and families throughout our community. We look forward to continuing to serve alongside you for many years to come.
