ROCKINGHAM — Six Richmond County agencies and organizations are among the 12 across the region to receive Care to Share grants from Pee Dee Electric for the third quarter of 2024.
New Horizons Life and Family Services was one of three awarded a $5,000 grant.
The agency assists victims of domestic violence and sexual assault by providing emergency shelter, as well as hospital and court accompaniment, according to Executive Director Teshika Wall.
New Horizons helps clients with protection orders and Legal Aid paperwork; provides assistance with rent and utilities, household items, clothes, toiletries; and offers counseling and support groups.
“On behalf of New Horizons Life and Family Services, I want to express my sincere gratitude for the amazing generosity of Pee Dee Electric Corporation,” Wall told the RO. “We are proud to be chosen as a recipient of their Care to Share grant and so thankful for their amazing generosity and commitment to supporting our community.”
With the courts switching to e-filing, Wall said the grant funds would be used to purchase laptops and printers so clients can file protection orders and print out civil and criminal court documents. New Horizons will also purchase filing cabinets to store confidential client information.
New Horizons will host its annual Domestic Violence Vigil on Tuesday, Oct. 22 in front of the old courthouse. For more information, call 910-997-4840.

Taylor Demby, manager of marketing and communications for PDE, said there were two other local organizations awarded $5,000: Richmond County Hospice; and Senior Games of Richmond County.
Richmond County Hospice recently raised more than $90,000 with its annual Taste of the Sandhills featuring Dancing with the Stars fundraiser.

PDE also awarded $7,500 each to three first responder groups: the Ellerbe Fire Department; Richmond County Rescue Squad; and the Richmond County Chiefs Association.
Demby said PDE also awarded four Care to Share grants in Anson County, and one each in Union and Montgomery counties, for a total of $70,000.
The program, Demby said, “supports initiatives promoting community well-being and assistance for local non-profit organizations.”
“Pee Dee Electric’s Care to Share Program utilizes the power of giving to create meaningful change in our communities,” said Demby. “We are honored to offer grants that assist local non-profits and emergency services.”
First responder agencies can receive grants up to $7,500, with applications available every two years, according to Demby. Other local nonprofit organizations can apply for a maximum grant of $5,000 every three years.
“I take great pride in the important work these nonprofits are doing in our communities and throughout our service area,” Demby added. “It’s rewarding to support them and help advance their missions through our Care to Share program.”
The Care to Share grant program is funded through contributions by members rounding up their bills to the nearest dollar amount.
