ROCKINGHAM — Several local organizations and businesses are holding events in recognition of October being National Breast Cancer Month.

The Richmond County Cancer Care Treasure Shop is hosting its fourth annual Walk for Hope fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 12.

The walk, which starts at 9 a.m., will go from the shop at 1788 E. Broad Ave. to Walmart and back.

Cost for the walk is $25 per person or $20 for a group of 10 or more. However, organizers say no one wanting to participate will be turned away if they can’t pay.

The price includes a T-shirt, and additional shirts are being sold for $10 each.

All the money raised for the walk will go to the American Cancer Society. Checks for donations can also be written directly to the ACS.

Call the shop at 910-817-9342 for more information.

The following day, Sunday, Oct. 13, American Legion Post No. 49 in Hamlet will host a Breast Cancer Awareness Day event with a 50/50 raffle and door prizes. Those wearing pink will receive “a little something special.”

The Richmond Service League is again hosting its Bowling for Breast Cancer fundraiser at Striker’s Bowling Alley from 6-9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14.

This year, RSL will be raising funds to help two Richmond County residents who are currently battling breast cancer.

The cost to bowl is $20 per person. Lane sponsorships are available for $50 for businesses or to honor or remember a loved one. Tickets (six for $5 or 25 for $20) for a 50/50 raffle and door prizes will also be sold.

Contact the Richmond Service League through Facebook for more information and lane sponsorships.

The Berry Patch in Ellerbe is also selling pink vanilla ice cream once again for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This year, the proceeds are going to help Stephanie Allen pay medical expenses for breast cancer treatment. Her daughter, Emma, works at the Berry Patch in the ice cream shop.

The ice cream is available for the entire month of October.
